What is the survey about?

The survey is about people’s views and experiences of crime and anti-social behaviour.

The survey includes questions about whether you have experienced any crime or anti-social behaviour in the last year, your thoughts and opinions about the police and criminal justice system, your perception of your local area and some questions about any security measures you may have taken to help protect yourself from crime.

You don’t need to have experience of crime or anti-social behaviour – we are interested in hearing from people with a range of views and experiences.

As well as asking questions related to crime and safety, we will ask some questions about you such as your age, education and employment status. This information is collected to make sure we hear from different groups of people within the population.

We understand that some of these questions may be quite sensitive. Information on support organisations is available on the Further help and support page.

Almost all questions include a ‘Prefer not to say’ code to allow you to skip individual questions.

Why has my household been chosen?

Your household has been chosen for one of the following reasons:

  • Most households are chosen at random from the Royal Mail’s list of addresses. We do not know who lives at these addresses until someone takes part in the survey.
  • Alternatively, you may have taken part in the Crime Survey before (during a visit to your home by one of our interviewers) and indicated that you may be willing to take part again. This time, the survey is being carried out online.

Once an address has been selected for the study, we cannot replace it with another address. This means that we rely on the goodwill of those who have been chosen to take part in the survey.

Who is conducting the survey?

This survey is being carried out by Verian, an independent research organisation, on behalf of the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The ONS is the UK’s largest independent producer of official statistics. They are responsible for collecting, analysing and disseminating statistics about the UK’s society, population and economy. Further information about the ONS can be found on their website: www.ons.gov.uk.

Verian is an independent social research agency. They conduct research on behalf of government departments and other public sector organisations, helping decision makers to better understand various aspects of life in the UK. Further information about Verian can be found on their website: www.veriangroup.com/en-gb.

I haven’t experienced any crime – should I still take part?

It is very important that we talk to people who may not have experienced crime as well as those who have, to make sure that we have a balanced view. Addresses are selected at random, which means that some high crime areas will be included as well as some areas where crime is very rare. By hearing from people from all types of areas, the survey is able to give a more complete picture of crime in the country as a whole.

I’ve taken part in the crime survey before – will I be asked the same questions?

Many of the questions will be similar to questions you have been asked before. We are aiming to understand whether your views and experiences have changed since you last took part in the survey.

This survey is shorter than the survey you previously took part in.

Who should I contact if I don't want to take part?

Taking part in the survey is voluntary, but we hope that you will as this will give us the best possible picture of people’s experiences across the country.

If you decide not to take part, you don't need to do anything. However, you may still receive up to three reminder letters from us, which you are free to ignore.

If you do not wish to receive any further reminder mailings, you can either:

Please be ready to provide your reference number, address and postcode so we can opt you out of further communication.
